AAK UK appoint new Communication & CSR Director
World leading supplier of speciality vegetable oils and fats, AAK UK, has announced the appointment of Judith Murdoch to the post of Communication and CSR Director.
The new post reinforces AAK UK’s continuing commitment to integrate sustainability into every aspect of its business, whilst also focusing on its environmental and social responsibilities.
With a career background in food and management, and having spent 8 years as marketing manager at AAK UK, Judith already has a keen awareness of the company’s responsibility to source, handle, produce and deliver its products in the most efficient and sustainable manner as it strives to meet its strategic goals:
“CSR couldn’t be more important for our business, not simply because it’s the right or ethical way to behave or because our customers expect us to operate in a certain way. Putting CSR at the heart of everything we do also makes sound business sense.”
As the UK’s largest importer and processor of palm oil, AAK UK has been actively involved in the campaign for sustainable palm oil from the outset. AAK UK became a founder member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) in 2004. Since then AAK UK has worked hard with global partners to promote sustainable social and environmental practices in palm oil production, says Judith:
“Our Hull site now offers RSPO certified sustainable palm oil across our considerable range of products. The success of our RSPO-endorsed GreenPalm certificate trading programme has also proved that we are not alone in the industry in wanting to bring new, sustainable products to the market.”
The GreenPalm programme exclusively operates the Book and Claim supply chain option on behalf of the RSPO. Certified producers can convert their approved tonnage into certificates, placing offers for these on the GreenPalm market. Final product manufacturers that use palm, palm kernel oil or any palm based derivative or fraction can offset their physical oil usage by placing bids for these certificates, with the full premium going directly to the producer.
This is just one area in which AAK UK is working to source, handle, produce and deliver products in the most sustainable manner, says Judith.
“If we are communicating effectively with our staff, our customers, our suppliers and the communities in which we are working – we have to listen and we have to act. If we are doing it right, this will have implications in terms of how we do business across the board.
“Effective communication is a two way process that allows AAK UK to respond appropriately to our operating environment. Our efforts enable us to be more successful in commercial terms and in turn it secures our future as a business.”
